‘May impact professional opportunities’: Delhi University warns students over Jantar Mantar protest

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered the suspension of mobile internet services within a 1.5-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar in New Delhi as security arrangements were intensified around the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination system.

The internet restrictions were imposed from 4 pm to midnight on July 23, according to officials, citing concerns over maintaining law and order following recent clashes during the protest. Authorities also increased security deployment in central Delhi, while businesses in Connaught Place were advised to close early as a precautionary measure.

"Such activities can also pose serious risks to students’ personal safety and significantly impact their academic progress and professional opportunities.” They said in the post.

Amid the restrictions, Delhi University issued an advisory asking students and faculty members to avoid visiting Jantar Mantar. The university said that unlawful assemblies and demonstrations at the protest site, which are regulated under Supreme Court guidelines, could lead to legal action.

“Your safety matters to us,” the university said in its message, urging students to prioritise their safety and comply with the law. It also warned students about fake and misleading content being circulated online amid the ongoing agitation.

The advisory has triggered discussions among students and observers, with some questioning whether restrictions and warnings could discourage young people from participating in public demonstrations, while authorities maintain that the measures are aimed at preventing violence and ensuring safety.

The security measures come after violence during the CJP’s “Chalo Sansad” march earlier this week, when protesters attempted to move towards Parliament. Police used tear gas shells and lathi charges after clashes broke out, with several protesters and police personnel sustaining injuries.

The CJP has continued its agitation at Jantar Mantar, demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities and seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The protest has gained wider attention, with opposition leaders, student groups and several public figures expressing views on the issue. Authorities have maintained that action will be taken against individuals involved in violence, while protesters continue to demand answers over examination reforms and alleged paper leaks.
