Delhi Airport warns of flight delays from April 26–May 4 due to runway closure, wind shift

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has issued an advisory warning passengers of potential flight disruptions from April 26 to May 4, 2025, due to a shift in wind direction and the temporary closure of one of its runways. The airport operator has urged travellers to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight information.
The closure of Runway 28/10 on April 8 for Instrument Landing System (ILS) upgradation has already impacted flight operations. The situation is expected to be further affected by a forecasted change in wind direction to easterly winds during the specified period.
"We would like to inform you that, as per the forecast from the India Meteorological Department, easterly winds are expected between April 26 and May 4. This change in wind patterns may potentially affect flight operations during this period. We are actively coordinating with the airlines and ATC to work out the flight schedules to have minimum impact on flights. For updated flight information, passengers are requested to get in touch with the airline concerned," DIAL stated on X.
Under normal westerly wind conditions, Runway 27 is utilized in mixed mode for both arrivals and departures, while Runways 29L and 29R handle arrivals and departures, respectively. However, with the anticipated easterly winds, departures will occur from Runways 09 and 11L, and arrivals will be limited to Runway 11R, potentially reducing the airport's operational capacity.
The fourth runway is expected to be operational again in the first week of May, which should alleviate some of the congestion and delays experienced during this period.
Passengers are advised to stay updated on their flight schedules and plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
