Matchmaking no joke: Maintaining witty conversation an issue for 62% of dating-matrimony app users

A recent survey by Juleo, a trusted exclusive singles club, in partnership with YouGov, reveals that over 60% of users on dating and matrimony apps feel significant pressure to keep conversations witty. This finding highlights the emotional strain experienced by users on these platforms, which have become increasingly popular among the youth for their ability to connect individuals beyond the reach of traditional matchmakers.
The survey, which sampled over 1,000 singles across the top eight Indian cities, uncovers deeper issues beyond conversational pressure. Two out of three individuals who have used dating or matrimony apps and websites have never met their potential partners in person, pointing to a prevalent lack of real-life connections. Major reasons for this trend include difficulty finding genuine profiles and experiences of ghosting.
The report also raises concerns about the authenticity of profiles, with an alarming 78% of female respondents reporting encounters with fake profiles. This has led to a strong demand for enhanced privacy and better control over profiles, with 74% of both men and women advocating for profile visibility to be restricted to selected individuals. Furthermore, 82% of women believe that government ID verification should be mandated for dating or matrimonial platforms to improve safety and authenticity.
The survey also highlights the emotional and psychological toll on users, with nearly half reporting mental health issues related to their experiences on these platforms. The pressure to make a positive impression online is evident, with 62% of respondents feeling compelled to maintain a witty conversation. Three out of four women feel overwhelmed by their experiences, while 70% of users find the endless swiping feature futile and frustrating. As a result, two out of three people express a preference for a personalised AI matchmaker to assist in finding suitable profiles, rather than enduring the exhaustive search process.
Kamna Chhibber, leading Clinical Psychologist & TEDxspeaker, said, "Relationships are challenging in modern times. The availability of too many choices and options can become a deterrent in building significant partnerships. Additionally, safety can get compromised as individuals seek to contact and meet more people. Building mechanisms for exploring relationships in a manner that is safe and which protects them - physically, emotionally and psychologically - is critical."
Varun Sud, Founder-CEO Juleo, said, "The report shares the deep pain faced by the youth today in pursuit of love. Face-to-face conversations and in-person meetings form the core foundation of genuine relationships. Milne se hi baat banti hai. We have hence started a global movement through Juleo to change how singles find love in a safe, trustworthy and responsible manner. "
