CRPF officer shoots 2 colleagues dead, injures one before killing himself in Assam's Nagaon

Assam: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assistant sub-inspector allegedly shot dead two colleagues, seriously injured another and later died by suicide at a battalion camp in Assam's Nagaon district on Tuesday morning, prompting a joint police and CRPF investigation.

The incident took place at around 7 am at the 34 Battalion camp in Katimari. According to Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Paramita Sarkar, ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, who was deployed at the camp's main gate, opened fire on fellow personnel before turning the weapon on himself.

Two CRPF personnel — HV/GD Vishnu Prasad Baghel and SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav — died at the scene, Sarkar said.

ASI/Mane Govind Sripul sustained serious injuries in the firing and was initially taken to a private hospital. He was later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

Sequence of events

Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said Premabaram, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, was found without his assigned weapon while on duty at the camp's main gate on Tuesday morning.

He then allegedly took an INSAS rifle from the Guard Room and went to the rear side of the Quarter Guard, where he opened fire on Baghel, who died from his injuries.

Premabaram subsequently shot Yadav, who had arrived from Lucknow for document verification. He also died at the spot, Das said.

The officer then allegedly fired at Sripul, leaving him seriously injured. After the shooting, Premabaram entered the B/171 Barrack and shot himself, resulting in his death, according to the SSP.

Inquiry ordered

Senior CRPF and Assam Police officers reached the camp soon after the incident.

Police said a joint investigation with the CRPF has been launched, while the force has also ordered an inquiry into the shooting.
