New Delhi: As the assembly elections near, the political landscape of Haryana over the past decade starkly contrasts with its turbulent past under Congress rule. During Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s tenure as Chief Minister, the state experienced significant favouritism toward a specific community, resulting in widespread inequality, fear, and corruption.

Hooda served as the Chief Minister of Haryana from 2005 to 2014. Under the Congress government, preferential treatment was granted to one community, leading to clear discrimination against others. This favoritism fostered an environment where only those connected to the favored group could access opportunities, while others were systematically sidelined.

The influence of this dominant community extended deeply into the state’s systems, from government jobs to administrative roles. This control marginalized individuals from other communities, who found themselves without representation or advocates for their rights. The entrenched system left many feeling powerless and deprived of economic and social progress.

Perhaps the most concerning aspect was the immunity enjoyed by members of this dominant community. Despite instances of criminal behaviour, law enforcement appeared ineffective, and the state government’s reluctance to act only emboldened this group. This led to an atmosphere of fear, especially for those from other communities, who felt increasingly vulnerable and unable to seek protection or justice from authorities.

Women, in particular, suffered under this oppressive regime. The pervasive fear of violence and harassment severely restricted their freedom, forcing many to remain confined at home with limited opportunities for safety or advancement. The era marked a troubling period for women’s rights and independence, exacerbated by the dominant community's reign.

The Congress government under Hooda left a lasting impact on Haryana’s social fabric. The focus on appeasing one community eroded principles of equality and fairness, leading to significant division and frustration among the state's diverse population.
