Chennai weather alert: Four districts to see significant showers, thunderstorms expected

Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of southern Tamil Nadu on Saturday due to a low-level atmospheric circulation prevailing over south India.
According to the latest weather bulletin, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning in isolated areas.
The Met Department said rainfall intensity may vary, with some interior and coastal regions expected to receive heavier downpours during the evening and night hours.
The bulletin also noted that Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts may witness intense rainfall on Sunday, suggesting that wet conditions could persist for the next couple of days.
Officials have advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay alert, while local administrations have been asked to prepare for potential disruptions.
In Chennai and nearby suburban areas, the sky will remain partly cloudy with a chance of light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning later in the evening. Despite intermittent cloud cover, sunny spells are expected during the day.
The maximum temperature in Chennai is likely to hover around 32–33°C, while the minimum temperature may range between 25–26°C. Winds are expected to blow from the northeast at moderate speeds, in line with the ongoing northeast monsoon.
No warnings have been issued for fishermen, with sea conditions along the Tamil Nadu coast expected to remain generally calm. However, authorities have urged fishermen to stay cautious and monitor updates, as localised weather changes may still occur due to the evolving atmospheric system.
