Zubeen Garg death: Centre seeks Singapore’s help under MLAT

New Delhi: The Centre has formally sought Singapore’s cooperation in connection with the probe into the death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the government has invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) to facilitate evidence sharing and legal procedures between India and Singapore.
The MLAT is a bilateral agreement that allows signatory countries to exchange information and assist each other in criminal investigations. By invoking the treaty, Indian authorities aim to obtain official records, forensic details, and other information relevant to the ongoing investigation.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved musicians, passed away recently while in Singapore, sparking widespread mourning across the state and the country. His death also led to demands for a thorough inquiry, with fans and political leaders seeking clarity on the circumstances.
"The Ministry of Home Affairs has now formally invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) in connection with the FIR lodged by Assam Police regarding the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen.” Himanta Biswa Sarma noted on his X post.
