Case filed against 10 TISS students for allegedly holding event without permission, raising slogans

Mumbai: Police have registered a case against ten students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for allegedly organising an unauthorised event on campus to mark the first death anniversary of former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba, officials said on Tuesday.
The event was reportedly held on Sunday at the TISS campus in Mumbai’s Chembur area, without prior permission from the institute’s administration or the police, a senior official from Trombay police station confirmed.
Why was the FIR filed?
According to the police, the students also raised slogans during the gathering in support of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, both of whom are currently in jail in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case.
Following the incident, the TISS administration lodged a formal complaint with the police, prompting legal action.
Based on the complaint, the Trombay police registered a case against the ten identified students and other unnamed people under various charges, including:illegal assembly, causing prejudice to the nation and causing enmity between various groups.
Who was G N Saibaba?
G N Saibaba, a former English professor at Delhi University, was arrested in connection with an alleged Maoist links case. He was later acquitted by the Bombay High Court in 2024. He passed away on October 12, 2024, due to health complications.
