Budget Session 2026 dates announced: Parliament to meet from January 28 to April 2 in two phases

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday announced that President Droupadi Murmu has approved the convening of both Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026, which will begin on January 28, 2026.

According to the announcement, the first phase of the Budget Session will run from January 28 to February 13. Parliament will then go on recess and reassemble on March 9, with the second phase continuing until April 2, 2026.

Rijiju shared the development on X, noting that the session marks an important opportunity for “meaningful debate and people-centric governance.”

The Budget Session, traditionally the first parliamentary session of the calendar year, will open with President Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. As per parliamentary convention, the session will be divided into two parts, allowing standing committees to scrutinise demands for grants of various ministries during the break.

The upcoming session is expected to be legislatively intensive, with several key bills likely to be introduced or taken up for discussion, similar to the recent Winter Session.

Meanwhile, ahead of the session, India is also set to host the AI Impact Summit in February in New Delhi, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology will submit its recommendations on Artificial Intelligence during the Budget Session.
