Hyderabad: Maganti Gopinath, MLA of the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), passed away in the early hours of Sunday at a private hospital in Hyderabad. He was 63.

The legislator had been admitted to AIG Hospitals on June 5 after suffering a massive heart attack. The hospital confirmed that he was declared dead at 5.45 am.

Following the news of his death, BRS working president K T Rama Rao visited AIG Hospitals to pay his respects.

Gopinath represented the Jubilee Hills constituency, where he secured a win in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections by defeating Congress candidate and former Indian cricket captain Mohd Azharuddin.

He began his political career with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), serving as its Hyderabad unit president and winning the Jubilee Hills seat on a TDP ticket in 2014. In 2016, he joined the then-ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), now BRS, along with several other TDP MLAs. He was re-elected as a BRS candidate in both the 2018 and 2023 assembly polls.

Leaders across political parties mourned his passing. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Union Minister and state BJP president G Kishan Reddy and several others extended their condolences.
