PM Modi sounds Assam 2026 poll bugle; Says ‘vote for BJP to protect tribal rights’

Dibrugarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday sounded the poll bugle in Assam, asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will return to power for a third consecutive term while promising to safeguard tribal rights and accelerate development in the state.
Addressing a major rally in Dibrugarh after arriving in Guwahati the previous night, the Prime Minister urged voters to back the BJP, saying earlier governments had “failed Assam” and neglected the interests of indigenous communities.
“Vote for us to protect tribal rights in Assam,” Modi said, sharpening his attack on past regimes while projecting the BJP as the guarantor of stability and growth.
The rally at Kulaguri field in Bihali, located in Biswanath district, is being seen as a strategic push targeting voters across key constituencies, including Biswanath, Behali, and Gohpur, as the party intensifies its campaign ahead of the Assembly polls.
The Prime Minister’s address comes a day after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the BJP’s ‘Sankalp Patra’ for Assam, outlining 31 promises.
The manifesto pledges protection of land, heritage, and the dignity of indigenous people, alongside a proposed ₹5 lakh crore infrastructure investment.
Among its key proposals are the recovery of encroached land from “Bangladeshi Miyas”, implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, and expanded employment opportunities for youth.
The party has also promised to enforce the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, to fast-track the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, campaigning separately in the state, also appealed for public support for a third BJP term, highlighting infrastructure gains under the current government.
Addressing rallies in Digboi and Makum, Sonowal contrasted what he described as development under the BJP with “corruption and mismanagement” during the previous Congress rule.
With high-decibel campaigning underway and a strong pitch around identity, land, and development, the BJP appears to be consolidating its narrative as it seeks to retain power in Assam for a third straight term in the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026.
