BIG BJP election move: Piyush Goyal, Baijayant Panda named in-charges for 2026 Tamil Nadu, Assam polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday made strategic organisational appointments by naming senior leaders to oversee its campaign efforts for the crucial 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Assam.
In a bid to sharpen electoral focus in these politically significant states, the party entrusted Union Minister Piyush Goyal with the role of election in-charge for Tamil Nadu, while BJP National Vice-President Baijayant Panda was assigned a similar responsibility for Assam.
The announcements were part of a broader directive by the BJP leadership to gear up early for the assembly polls, expected to be held in the first half of next year. In Tamil Nadu, Goyal’s appointment underscores the party’s determination to expand its footprint in a state where it has historically struggled to make a significant breakthrough.
The BJP captured four seats in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, but remains a minor player compared with regional heavyweights such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Assisting Goyal in Tamil Nadu will be Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Law and Justice, and Murlidhar Mohol, Minister of State for Civil Aviation — both tapped as co-incharges to support organisational and campaign work.
In Assam, Panda will lead the BJP’s election preparation as the party works to defend its ruling position. The BJP, as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been in power in Assam since 2016 and secured a commanding 75 seats out of 126 in the 2021 elections, with Himanta Biswa Sarma serving as Chief Minister.
Panda will be supported by Sunil Kumar Sharma, a BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, and former Union Minister Darshana Ben Jardosh as co-incharges in Assam.
The early appointment of in-charges reflects the BJP’s intent to consolidate organisational strength, build alliances, and fine-tune election strategies well ahead of polling dates in both Tamil Nadu and Assam.
Political observers say that with regional dynamics shifting and national parties recalibrating strategies, these leadership roles could prove pivotal in shaping the BJP’s electoral fortunes in 2026.
