Bhogapuram airport opens: Flights, features & future expansion explained
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district, marking the opening of one of India's newest greenfield airports. Built at an investment of nearly ₹5,000 crore, the airport is expected to improve air connectivity for North Andhra while creating new opportunities for business, tourism and employment.
Commercial flight operations will begin on August 17, offering passengers in the region a modern airport with improved domestic and international travel options.
A boost for air travellers
For people living in North Andhra, the new airport promises easier and faster access to air travel. Developed by the GMR Group, the airport has an initial capacity to handle six million passengers every year, with plans to gradually expand this to 40 million passengers annually in future phases.
The airport is expected to reduce travel time for residents of Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and nearby districts, while also improving connectivity to major cities across India and international destinations over the coming years.
The project is also expected to ease pressure on the existing Visakhapatnam Airport as passenger traffic in the region continues to grow.
Second greenfield airport in a year
Bhogapuram becomes the second greenfield airport in India to begin operations in 2026, following the opening of Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, which started commercial services on June 15. The launch reflects India's continued investment in airport infrastructure to support rising passenger demand and strengthen regional connectivity under the country's expanding aviation network.
More than an Airport
Spread across 2,200 acres, the airport has been developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd (GVIAL) under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) framework.
However, the airport is only one part of a much larger integrated development project covering over 2,700 acres. The master plan includes a 500-acre aviation hub, an Aviation University and EduCity, various commercial and residential developments, airside infrastructure along with new approach roads and supporting facilities.
The Andhra Pradesh government believes the integrated project will help transform North Andhra into an important aviation, education and industrial centre.
Creating jobs
The state government has described the airport as a major economic development project that will support industrial growth, exports, tourism and employment generation. Improved air connectivity is expected to attract new investments into manufacturing, logistics, hospitality and other service sectors. The proposed aviation university and education hub are also expected to help develop skilled manpower for the aviation and aerospace industries.
Speaking during the inauguration, G. B. S. Raju, Business Chairman, GMR Airports Ltd, expressed confidence that the airport would become an important gateway for eastern India. He said the airport is expected to attract investments, generate employment and contribute to the long-term economic development of the region.
GMR also noted that the airport was completed several months ahead of schedule.
Better connectivity
Once operations begin later this month, passengers can expect modern terminal facilities, improved road access and greater flight connectivity. As airlines gradually expand their services, the airport is likely to improve access to important business and tourism destinations while reducing dependence on existing airports in neighbouring regions.
The large land area also provides room for future expansion as passenger demand increases over the coming decades.
Other major projects
During his visit to Andhra Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth nearly ₹18,000 crore across various sectors.
Among the key announcements was the foundation stone for Andhra Pradesh's first semiconductor manufacturing facility at Visakhapatnam. Developed by ASIP Technologies Pvt. Ltd. in partnership with APACT, Republic of Korea, the project is expected to manufacture around 96 million semiconductor chips annually under the India Semiconductor Mission.
The Prime Minister also launched several major renewable energy transmission projects worth thousands of crores to strengthen the national power grid and improve the integration of clean energy generated in Andhra Pradesh.
In addition, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several National Highway projects worth over ₹1,880 crore, aimed at improving road connectivity, reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion across the state.
New chapter for North Andhra
The opening of Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport represents more than just another airport addition to India's aviation map. For passengers, it promises greater travel convenience and improved connectivity. For businesses, it opens new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment.
