Addressing the gathering, Vaishnaw said the service would connect Bengaluru, the country's IT and startup hub, with Mumbai, its financial capital.
He said the train would travel through Anantapur and Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh before entering North Karnataka, covering Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburagi. It would then pass through Solapur, Pune and Kalyan before reaching Mumbai.
"The train will cover several parts of North Karnataka, which were erstwhile uncovered by good, world-class train connectivity. The route was finalised unanimously after consultations with Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi, Somanna and Kumaraswamy, among others," he said.
Vaishnaw also announced that the next Vande Bharat Sleeper train for Karnataka would originate from Bengaluru, connect parts of North Karnataka towards Hubballi and then proceed towards Pune and Mumbai.
Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and H D Kumaraswamy, Ministers of State V Somanna and Shobha Karandlaje, and MPs Tejasvi Surya, P C Mohan and C N Manjunath were among those present at the flag-off ceremony.
The South Western Railway said the new service would provide passengers with a comfortable overnight travel option and improve connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
