Bengaluru: The Indian Railways is reportedly considering introducing a Duronto Express service between Bengaluru and Mumbai, which could cut travel time to around 18 hours, offering a much faster option for passengers on one of the country’s busiest rail routes.

The proposal comes soon after the Railway Board approved a bi-weekly superfast train between the two cities. However, the newly announced service has drawn criticism for being slower than existing trains such as the Udyan Express.

Bi-weekly superfast train draws mixed response

The SMVT Bengaluru–LTT Mumbai Superfast Express (16553/16554) was announced on December 9, 2025. Train 16553 departs from SMVT Bengaluru at 8:35 pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays, reaching Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Mumbai, at 8:40 pm the next day.

The return service, Train 16554, leaves LTT Mumbai at 11:15 pm on Sundays and Wednesdays and arrives in Bengaluru at 10:30 pm the following day. The train covers 1,209 km in about 24 hours, stopping at 14 stations, including Hubballi and Pune, and runs with 17 LHB coaches.

Railway passengers, however, have expressed disappointment over the long travel time, calling for a faster and more convenient train option.

Duronto Express could cut travel time

According to reports, the Railway Board is examining a Duronto Express between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai. The proposed route includes Tumakuru, Davangere, Hubballi, Belagavi, Miraj, and Pune.

If approved, the Duronto is expected to run with limited stops, significantly reducing travel time. Two rakes have reportedly been planned, with primary maintenance at KSR Bengaluru.

Tentative Duronto Express timings

Depart KSR Bengaluru: 4:30 pm

Arrive CSMT Mumbai: 10:30 am (next day)

Depart CSMT Mumbai: 3:00 pm

Arrive KSR Bengaluru: 9:30 am (next day)

Duronto Express trains typically offer onboard meals included in the fare, dynamic pricing, and faster journeys. A 3AC ticket for the Bengaluru–Mumbai route is expected to cost around ₹2,500, making it a premium yet affordable option.

Despite growing buzz, Bengaluru DRM Ashutosh Kumar Singh clarified that no official announcement has been made regarding the Duronto service. He also confirmed that the bi-weekly superfast train has not been cancelled and remains operational.
