Bengaluru tops Asia’s most congested cities list: TomTom traffic index

Bengaluru: The city, often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, has been named the most congested city in Asia, according to the TomTom Traffic Index report. The study reveals that commuters in Bengaluru take an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to cover a mere 10 kilometers, resulting in an additional 132 hours spent in traffic jams annually.

The report attributes this alarming figure to the rapid population growth and the increasing number of vehicles on the city’s roads. Despite its reputation as a hub for innovation and technology, Bengaluru struggles with inadequate transportation facilities, making daily commutes a significant challenge for its residents.

Pune follows Bengaluru closely, with an average travel time of 27 minutes and 50 seconds for the same distance. Other cities in the top ranks include Manila in the Philippines (27 minutes and 20 seconds) and Taichung in Taiwan (26 minutes and 50 seconds).

Urban planners and policymakers are urged to address these challenges by prioritising public transportation, expanding road networks and implementing smart traffic management solutions. Without much intervention, the situation could further deteriorate, affecting the quality of life and economic productivity in these urban centers.
