Bank holiday September 2026: Banks could be shut for 3 days from Sept 11; Check dates

If you have banking work planned this weekend, the dates need attention. Bank branches could effectively remain unavailable for three consecutive days from Friday, September 11, to Sunday, September 13, with a nationwide bank strike on Friday followed by the Second Saturday and Sunday.
The September 11 bank strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) over demands including a five-day banking week and changes to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
September 12 is the Second Saturday, when bank branches are closed, while September 13 falls on Sunday. The three dates therefore create a longer interruption for customers who depend on physical branch services.
Can you still use UPI, ATMs and mobile banking?
Digital banking services are expected to continue during the period.
Customers can use UPI, internet banking and mobile banking for routine payments, transfers and other digital transactions. ATMs and other automated services are also expected to remain available.
SBI has specifically advised customers to use internet banking, YONO, mobile banking and UPI, along with ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs).
However, customers should remember that some services still require branch visits.
Cash requirements, document submissions, KYC updates and certain loan-related work may need physical banking facilities. Customers should therefore complete time-sensitive branch work before the strike.
What about cheques?
Customers dealing with cheques should also plan ahead.
Since physical branch operations can be affected by the strike and the following weekend closures, cheque-related processing could face delays.
Anyone with a time-sensitive cheque transaction should avoid leaving it until the last working day.
September 14: Is Monday also a bank holiday?
September 14 is a holiday in some states on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.
This means the bank holiday situation on Monday will depend on the state.
Customers should therefore check the applicable holiday arrangement for their location rather than assuming that all bank branches across India will remain closed on September 14.
More bank strikes are planned
The September 11 action is not the end of the union agitation.
The UFBU has announced another three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30. The unions have also warned of a continuous indefinite strike from October 26, 2026, if their demands are not resolved.
For customers, the key dates to remember immediately are September 11, 12 and 13: a strike on Friday, followed by the Second Saturday and Sunday.
Those requiring branch-dependent services should plan around these dates instead of waiting until the weekend.
