Balasore college harassment: Suspension, arrest follow ongoing investigation into student's self-immolation

Bhubaneshwar: The Odisha Government have formed a committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the alleged harassment case against Samira Kumar Sahu, an Assistant Professor of the FM Autonomous College, Balasore, followed by the suicide attempt by a woman student of the college on July 12.
NDTV reported that the Odisha Government’s Higher Education Department has suspended Dillip Kumar Ghose, Assistant Professor and Principal of the College, as well as the accused Head of Department, Samir Sahu.
Female student attempted suicide following harassment and threats
A 20-year-old B.Ed student of the government college in Balasore allegedly self herself ablaze after facing sexual harassment and academic threats by the Head of the Department.
According to reports, she had previously lodged complaints and staged a protest with the college administration alleging a faculty member of inappropriate behaviour, for which she later received threats about severe academic consequences.
The student is reportedly admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneshwar in critical condition with 90 per cent burns. The state government has assured medical assistance to the family.
Balasore Superintendent of Police Raj Prasad said, "In the case of a female student who attempted self-immolation, prima facie evidence has been established against a teacher. He has been arrested and forwarded to the court. This student had lodged a complaint with the Internal Compliance Committee on 30th June. We are enquiring about the findings of their report... Whoever is found guilty, accountability will be fixed for them."
