Attack on Saif Ali Khan: Centre orders crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Maharashtra

New Delhi:  The Union Home Ministry has instructed the Maharashtra government to take strict measures against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the state. The directive was communicated via a letter from the ministry in Delhi to the state's Home Department.

The development follows a representation made by former Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale, who cited a report on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants prepared by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora, on Tuesday, urged the state government to deport illegal Bangladeshi immigrants promptly to "make Mumbai safe."
Speaking to ANI, Deora said, "I have written a letter to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and urged that wherever any Bangladeshi is living illegally, they should be deported as soon as possible. The incident that happened at Saif Ali Khan's house is very worrying."

Deora also emphasised the need for an audit of illegal immigrants across the state to enhance Mumbai’s security. He demanded action against agencies that fail to verify documents before employing individuals.

Incident at Saif Ali Khan’s residence
Actor Saif Ali Khan sustained injuries to his thoracic spine during a break-in at his home last week. The intruder, identified as Mohd Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national, allegedly intended to commit theft.

Khan received treatment at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital and was discharged on Tuesday.

Court sentences Bangladeshi nationals
In a separate case, three Bangladeshi nationals were convicted by the 8th Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Mumbai for illegally entering and residing in India with forged documents.

Additional CJM Kanchan Zanwar sentenced them to imprisonment and imposed fines based on evidence presented by the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police.
