Assam rifles patrol attacked along India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh; one jawan killed, four injured

Changlang: One Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were injured on Tuesday morning after a patrol team was ambushed by suspected militants along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, officials confirmed.

The attack occurred around 6:30 AM near Nampong Nallah, located under the Nampong circle. The targeted unit—personnel from the 21 Assam Rifles—was patrolling an area where ongoing border fencing work is currently underway. 

Preliminary reports indicate that suspected insurgents opened fire on the patrolling team. Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42, was killed in the line of duty, while four other personnel sustained injuries. The injured security personnel were being evacuated for medical treatment, though official updates regarding their condition remain awaited.

Following the ambush, security forces launched intensified counter-insurgency operations across the region. Initial inputs point to the involvement of militants belonging to the NSCN (K-YA) faction, though authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identity of the outfit responsible. An official statement from the Assam Rifles is also awaited.

Confirming the incident, Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu stated that local police forces are actively gathering further intelligence.

"We have received information about the incident that took place along the India-Myanmar border and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect information related to it," the SP said.

The India-Myanmar border stretch along Changlang district remains a volatile zone due to the frequent movement of active insurgent groups operating across the porous international boundary. (PTI)
