Counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections continued on May 4, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) crossing the majority mark as per trends available at 7 pm and appearing set to form the next government in the state.

According to the latest standings, the BJP has won 81 seats and is leading in one more, taking its tally to 82 in the 126-member Assembly. The Indian National Congress (INC) has won 12 seats and is leading in seven seats. The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has secured nine seats and is ahead in one, while the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has won eight seats and is leading in two. Other parties, including the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Raijor Dal, and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), have made limited gains.

The halfway mark in the Assam Assembly is 64, placing the BJP comfortably ahead of the majority threshold. A clearer picture of the final seat tally is expected to emerge later in the day as counting progresses across constituencies.

Counting began at 8 am across all 126 constituencies following polling held in a single phase on April 9. The election recorded a voter turnout of over 85 percent, among the highest in recent years.

In a key contest, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi suffered his first electoral defeat, losing to BJP leader Hitendranath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes in the Jorhat Assembly constituency.

The election has been closely watched, with the BJP, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aiming to secure a third consecutive term in the state. With trends holding steady, the party is poised to retain power.

Counting is still underway, and final results are awaited.
