Counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections got underway at 8 am on Monday (May 4) across all 126 constituencies, with strict security measures in place. The process started with postal ballots, followed by counting of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from 8:30 am at designated centres.

The Election Commission has established 52 counting centres spread across 35 districts, including key venues such as Bodoland University, Bhattadev University, Nalbari College and Karimganj College. Each centre is equipped with 14 counting tables, and officials have put in place multi-layered security arrangements to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

In districts like Lakhimpur and Sivasagar, hundreds of personnel have been deployed to oversee the proceedings. Counting agents from various political parties were seen arriving early at strong rooms, including at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati.

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate from Nowboicha, Basanta Das, voiced strong confidence in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retaining power in the state.

He praised the arrangements made by the district administration and asserted that the alliance is set for a decisive victory.

"District administration has made good arrangements here... There is 100% chance that we are going to win and we will win every time," he said.

Das also credited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, expressing belief that the NDA will form the government once again.

"Under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, we are going to form the government again," he added.

In the Nowboicha constituency, Basanta Das is contesting against Congress candidate Joy Prakash Das and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee Achyut Das.

What do exit polls suggest?

Exit polls have largely indicated a comfortable win for the NDA, projecting the alliance to secure between 85 and 101 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress-led alliance is expected to win between 23 and 36 seats.

The BJP-led coalition is aiming for a third consecutive term in Assam, while the Congress has put together a six-party alliance in an attempt to challenge the incumbent government.

A look back at 2021 results

In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the NDA retained power with a total of 75 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 60 seats, while its allies AGP secured 9 seats and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) added 6 to the tally.

The Congress-led alliance managed to win 50 seats, with Congress itself securing 29 constituencies.

With a high voter turnout recorded during the single-phase polling held on April 9, the outcome of this election is being closely watched. As counting progresses, attention remains on whether the NDA can maintain its dominance in Assam or if the opposition can narrow the gap.
