Sick of switching corners for signal? TRAI lets you check 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G mobile network coverage

# News Desk

New Delhi: In a move to enhance transparency and empower consumers, telecom service providers (TSPs) have made mobile network coverage maps accessible on their official websites, following a directive by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

These digital maps offer user-friendly features and a standardised colour scheme to assist users in identifying mobile network availability. Subscribers can view specific technologies – 2G, 3G, 4G or 5G – provided by their TSP in their area of interest.

Search and location options for better accessibility

According to the Ministry of Communications, users may search their location manually or enable location services on their device to identify current coverage. A toggle switch or selection button allows users to filter by the desired technology type.

TRAI regulations specify: “Every service provider providing access service (wireless) shall publish on its website the service wise geospatial coverage maps in such a manner and format, as may be directed by the Authority from time to time, for the geographical areas where wireless voice or wireless broadband service is available for subscription by consumers.”

Publication deadline and TRAI consolidation

As per the mandate, telecom service providers are required to publish these maps by April 1, 2025. TRAI has also consolidated links to these coverage maps on its website, enabling users to access data from various service providers in one place.

User feedback and practical limitations

“The mobile subscribers may share their feedback or report any major discrepancy in coverage representation with their service provider through user feedback feature available on coverage maps. However, users may kindly note that actual mobile coverage experience may sometime vary from the coverage shown in map, including in indoor areas, as it depends upon various dynamic parameters,” TRAI stated.

Planning tool for policymakers and stakeholders

In addition to aiding consumers, these maps offer an overview of telecom coverage nationwide, helping stakeholders in planning and implementing e-enabled initiatives. They also support data-driven assessment of regulatory or policy interventions where necessary.
