Notice on beef biryani sparks row: What really happened at Aligarh Muslim University?

Uttar Pradesh: A notice issued at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) recently sparked outrage after it stated that beef biryani would be served instead of chicken biryani for Sunday lunch. The notice, issued by two “authorised” individuals, mentioned that the change was made “as per demand.”
The announcement triggered a backlash, with many questioning how such a decision was made and why it was circulated publicly. The incident soon turned into a heated debate, drawing reactions from both the university administration and political figures.
AMU’s clarification: a ‘typing error’
Following the uproar, AMU’s administration stepped in to address concerns. It clarified that the notice contained a "typing error" and had been withdrawn immediately. The university also pointed out that the notice lacked official signatures, casting doubt on its authenticity.
To address the issue, AMU authorities issued a show-cause notice to the two senior students responsible for drafting the notice. The administration assured that strict university regulations would be enforced to prevent such incidents in the future.
BJP leader’s allegations
The controversy took a political turn when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nishit Sharma, an AMU alumnus, criticised the university’s handling of the matter. He accused the administration of encouraging radical elements and covering up student misconduct.
Sharma alleged that the notice was displayed at the Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall and that senior food committee members were responsible for it. He called the university’s role in the matter “shameful” and questioned why such a notice was issued in the first place.
