New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has launched a nationwide protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill, with the first demonstration taking place in Patna on Wednesday. Various Muslim organisations are gathering at Gardanibagh to voice their opposition to the proposed changes in Waqf property regulations, which have sparked huge controversy within the Muslim community.

As part of their campaign, the organisers have invited Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to join the protest. The AIMPLB has planned multiple demonstrations across different cities in an effort to pressure the government into reconsidering the Bill. With leaders from various Muslim organisations actively participating, the agitation is expected to gain momentum in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Central Government has called a meeting of all Members of Parliament on Wednesday to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The session, scheduled from 9.30 am to 10.30 am in Coordination Room No 5 of the Parliament, will provide MPs with an overview of the proposed amendments. The government aims to clarify the Bill’s provisions before its presentation in Parliament, amid mounting opposition.

The Bill has drawn widespread criticism, with many arguing that it undermines the interests of the Muslim community. Organisations like Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind have strongly opposed the proposed amendments, warning that they could lead to the mismanagement of Waqf properties and diminish the autonomy of the community in managing its endowments.

AIMPLB spokesperson Qasim Rasool Ilyas condemned the Bill, stating, “It was introduced on communal grounds and violated the rights of Muslims.” He further accused the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) of acting unilaterally, disregarding concerns raised by opposition parties and Muslim organizations.

The JPC, after conducting several hearings, submitted its report on the Waqf Amendment Bill, recommending changes that were approved by 15 BJP MPs against the dissent of 11 Opposition members. However, Opposition leaders remain strongly critical, warning of its implications for Muslim religious and charitable institutions.

As resistance against the Bill grows, the government faces increasing pressure from both political opponents and nationwide protests.
