Abhishek Banerjee booked over inflammatory speeches during Bengal election campaign

An FIR has been registered against Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station over allegations that he delivered provocative and inflammatory speeches during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign.

The complaint was filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar, who approached Baguiati Police Station on May 5, a day after the Assembly election results were declared. In his complaint, Sarkar alleged that the Trinamool Congress leader made a series of inflammatory remarks during campaign rallies held between April 27 and May 3.

According to the FIR, the speeches allegedly promoted enmity between groups, disturbed public tranquillity, and included threatening remarks aimed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Watch the video below:

The complainant also submitted links to multiple campaign speeches as evidence.

Police formally registered the FIR on May 15 at around 2.45 pm at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station.

The case has been filed under Sections 192, 196, 351(2), and 353(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 123(2) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act.

The FIR stated that the speeches allegedly contained provocative, threatening, and inflammatory content that could trigger public disorder and affect communal harmony.

Investigators have also alleged that aggressive language was used against opposition workers during public meetings. Sub-Inspector Somnath Singha Roy has been assigned to investigate the matter further.
