‘Looked at himself in mirror’: AAP hits back at PM Modi over ‘Angry Uncles’ remark

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his “Angry Uncle” remark, saying he wrote the post after “looking at himself in the mirror”.

Sharing Modi’s post on X, the AAP said, “Modi ji wrote this tweet after looking at himself in the mirror.”

The AAP's reaction came a day after Modi, while addressing the centenary celebrations of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in Delhi, criticised those who oppose government initiatives and described them as “Angry Uncles”.

What PM Modi said at SRCC

Addressing students at the event on Teachers’ Day, Modi said they would encounter two kinds of people outside the campus.

“One type are those who positively transform the power of society into the power of the nation,” he said.

He then described the second group as people who become an “Angry Uncle” whenever a new project begins.

“Their favourite job is to oppose every work. They have only one dialogue: ‘What is the need for this?’” Modi said.

The Prime Minister cited several projects and initiatives, including the Statue of Unity, high-speed trains, UPI, semiconductor manufacturing and the new Parliament building, to illustrate his point.

Modi takes dig at critics

Modi referred to critics as “Phoofas” while recalling opposition to various government projects.

“When we were building the world's tallest statue, the ‘Phoofas’ braced themselves and said, ‘What is the need for this?’ We started work on high-speed trains, the ‘Phoofas’ spoke up again: ‘What is the need for this?’” he said.

He also recalled criticism surrounding UPI.

“We brought UPI, and these same ‘Phoofas’ would say: ‘Why UPI? What is the need for UPI?’” Modi said.

He said India had responded to such criticism through its development achievements.

“But India has replied to all such ‘Phoofas’. No one can stop India from doing what is necessary for the country,” he said.

AAP hits back

The AAP responded by directly targeting Modi over his remarks, using his own social media post to launch its counterattack.

The party's response came amid Modi's broader criticism of Opposition parties and those who question the need for major government projects.

The Prime Minister attended the centenary celebrations of SRCC on Teachers’ Day, marking his return to the college nearly 13 years after his previous visit.
