8th Pay Commission update: Govt confirms timeline, scope and salary review details

The Centre has provided fresh updates on the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC), outlining its timeline, scope and current progress, offering clarity to lakhs of central government employees and pensioners awaiting salary revisions.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, confirmed that the government had already issued a resolution on November 3, 2025, formally setting up the 8th Pay Commission along with the appointment of its chairperson and members.
The government said the commission has been given a fixed timeline of 18 months from the date of its formation to submit its recommendations.
Once submitted, the report will be reviewed and approved before implementation, meaning final changes in salaries, allowances and pensions will depend on government clearance.
What the 8th Pay Commission will review
The commission has been tasked with examining key aspects of compensation for central government employees, including:
- Pay structure and salary revisions
- Allowances and benefits
- Pension systems
The aim is to align government compensation with current economic conditions and evolving workforce needs.
Responding to a query raised by MP A Raja, the government clarified that the financial burden of the 8th CPC cannot be estimated yet.
Officials said the fiscal impact will only be calculated after the commission submits its recommendations and the government takes a final decision on implementation.
The 8th Pay Commission is currently in the process of gathering feedback from stakeholders.
- An 18-point questionnaire has been circulated
- The deadline for submissions has been extended to March 31, 2026
Inputs from employees, departments and experts will play a key role in shaping the final recommendations.
When will salary hike be implemented?
While revised pay scales are tentatively expected to be effective from January 1, 2026, the actual rollout will depend on:
- Submission of the commission’s report
- Government approval and notification
This means employees may have to wait until the process is completed for official implementation.
What it means for employees
The latest update signals that the process is underway, but final salary hikes, pension revisions and allowance changes are still some time away.
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to play a crucial role in determining the future pay structure for millions of central government employees across India.
