Six, including on-duty constable, killed in high-speed car-lorry crash in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur

Chennai: Six people, including a police constable on duty, were killed after a speeding car crashed into a lorry near a police checkpoint in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district in the early hours of Wednesday.

The accident took place near Vellakovil on the Karur National Highway, police said.

According to officials, police personnel were clearing a lorry that had earlier hit the median barrier near the highway checkpost when the collision occurred.

Police constable Ravichandran was assisting in the operation along with the lorry driver at the time.

Car reportedly lost control before impact

Officials said a car travelling at high speed along the same stretch suddenly lost control and rammed into the stationary lorry with great force.

The impact killed six people on the spot, including Constable Ravichandran, the lorry driver and four occupants of the car.

Senior police officials and rescue personnel rushed to the scene soon after receiving information about the accident and began rescue operations.

The bodies were later recovered from the mangled vehicles and shifted to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Police said the identities and other details of the deceased are still being verified. Efforts are also underway to inform their relatives.

Probe underway as traffic restored on highway

Preliminary investigations suggest overspeeding may have been one of the major causes behind the crash, though police said all possible angles are being examined.

The Vellakovil police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

Traffic movement along the highway was disrupted for some time following the accident before authorities removed the damaged vehicles and restored normal flow.

The deaths, particularly that of the police constable on duty, triggered grief among local residents in the region.
