Kolkata: A ticket examiner was assaulted while performing duty at Baruipur station in South 24 Parganas on Saturday, triggering concern along the Sealdah South section of Eastern Railway.

The incident occurred when a passenger threw hot ghugni, a chickpea dish, at the face of female ticket examiner Pooja Kumari as she requested to see her ticket.

Railway police reported that the Baruipur local was stationed at platform number 2 of Baruipur Junction. TTE Kumari entered the women’s coach to check tickets. She stated that all passengers were showing their tickets individually, except a passenger sitting with a friend while eating ghugni. Complaints arose from nearby passengers who noted the pair had been occupying seats since Subhashgram station.

When TTE Kumari asked the two passengers for their tickets, one of the women, under the pretext of presenting her ticket, flung hot ghugni in Kumari’s face. The examiner claimed the hot dish burned her eyes severely, causing immediate pain. Despite the shock, she wiped her eyes and ensured the accused was brought down from the train.

RPF intervenes and accused arrested

The screams attracted Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, who arrived promptly, arrested the passenger, and handed her over to Government Railway Police (GRP). An RPF officer stated: “The accused passenger's name is Saida Bibi. She lives in the Subhashgram area. She had a ticket from Subhashgram to Sealdah. But she did not buy a ticket to come to Baruipur. The accused has been handed over to the Government Railway Police personnel.”

Complaint filed, legal action sought

TTE Kumari has lodged a complaint with Baruipur GRP, seeking legal action against the passenger.

Similar attack reported recently in same district

A few days prior, a similar attack occurred at Canning Station. Female ticket inspector Tanushree Roy was assaulted while checking tickets on the Down Ballygunge-Canning local by a passenger who boarded without a ticket. Fellow passengers intervened, preventing serious injury, and the accused was apprehended.
