Shocking! 9,501 cases of violence against women registered in Kerala in six months

Malappuram: Despite the Kerala and Central governments implementing various schemes and laws, violence against women continues to escalate in the state. As of June this year, a staggering 9,501 cases have already been registered, averaging more than two incidents every hour and approximately 53 cases each day.
This persistent violence occurs despite the existence of robust legal frameworks such as the Domestic Violence Prohibition Act, Dowry Prohibition Act, and the Prevention of Sexual Violence against Women at Workplaces. Alarmingly, a significant number of these cases involve abuse by husbands and family members—those who are supposed to be protectors—with 2,327 such cases reported.
In addition to domestic abuse, the state has also seen a high incidence of crimes like rape, defamation, and kidnapping. In 2023, Kerala police recorded a total of 18,980 cases of violence against women.
