Pathanamthitta sexual abuse case takes turn as medical test finds no assault; break-up motive probed

Pathanamthitta: A sexual harassment case involving a 13-year-old schoolgirl in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district has taken a fresh turn after a medical examination found no evidence that she had been subjected to sexual assault, according to police sources.
The case came to light after the girl alleged that she had been sexually harassed by several people, including some of her classmates. The allegations prompted police to register two cases and launch an investigation.
Police sources said the latest medical findings did not support the allegation of sexual assault. They further claimed that the girl may have made the complaint following a break-up with her boyfriend.
However, police have not closed the case. Sources said they would continue to examine the circumstances that led to the complaint and determine whether any offences were committed.
Cases registered against several accused
Earlier, police had registered two cases at Koodal Police Station based on the girl's statement. The cases named multiple accused, including minors who were her classmates.
The girl had alleged that she was sexually harassed both on the school premises and at locations outside the campus. One of the alleged incidents was said to have taken place at the home of a female classmate.
Police questioned the accused, including minors and adults, before releasing them after issuing notices directing them to appear whenever required as part of the investigation.
Police sources also said investigators found inconsistencies in the girl's statements. As evidence was considered insufficient to proceed with arrests, those taken into custody were released.
The allegations surfaced after the girl's sister informed Childline about incidents that had allegedly taken place several months earlier. During a counselling session at her school, the girl identified people whom she claimed had sexually harassed her.
Child Rights Commission had taken suo motu case
Following media reports about the allegations, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights had taken up the matter on its own.
Commission Chairperson K V Manoj Kumar sought reports from the District Child Protection Officer, the District Police Chief and the Child Welfare Committee on the incident.
