'They promised us a future': One teen's complaint exposed a Kerala worship centre

Pathanamthitta: A preliminary inquiry by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has uncovered allegations that multiple children staying at a worship centre in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district may have been subjected to abuse and exploitation, expanding an investigation that began with a complaint from a 17-year-old boy.
The case originated when a 17-year-old boy from Anakkara alleged that staff members at the worship centre assaulted him. Following the complaint, police registered a case against three staff members of the Elohim Global Worship Centre.
The boy had reportedly been staying at the centre after being promised educational support and assistance in finding employment due to his family's financial hardships.
Initially registered by Kattappana Police in Idukki district, the case was later transferred to Elavumthitta Police Station in Pathanamthitta for further investigation.
CWC finds signs of broader abuse
As part of its inquiry, the Child Welfare Committee interviewed several individuals associated with the centre and found indications that other children may have experienced similar treatment.
According to CWC Chairperson Leena K Subash, the committee rescued a child who was allegedly being housed at the facility without proper authorisation.
Officials also discovered that several people, including children and elderly residents, had been accommodated at the centre without the necessary approvals.

Children allege assault and unpaid work
The committee said children staying at the facility reported being physically assaulted.
According to officials, one rescued child underwent a medical examination that revealed injuries.
The children also alleged that they were compelled to work at the centre without receiving wages. Investigators are examining claims that children from financially disadvantaged families were brought to the facility with promises of education and employment support but were instead made to work.
Authorities tracing other residents
The CWC said three children had been staying at the worship centre and that authorities are attempting to locate a woman and her child who were also reportedly living there.
The worship centre has since been closed following the allegations.
Police said the 17-year-old complainant had stayed at the centre for several months but was allegedly denied the educational assistance that had been promised to him.
Investigators claim he was instead forced to perform work at the facility.
A case has been registered under provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to determine the full extent of the alleged abuse and exploitation.
