Organ trade: Seven victims in Thrissur also, reveals Mullassery Panchayat ex-president

Thrissur: In a serious revelation in connection with the Iran-based organ trade allegedly orchestrated by Thrissur native Sabith Nasar who has been arrested, a former Panchayat president held that organ trafficking had taken place in Thrissur as well.

Former Mullassery Panchayath president C A Babu revealed that seven people have become victims of organ trade in that panchayat alone.

Babu also said it was found that the majority of the victims are women in an investigation done by NGO Santhwanam under his leadership. 

The mafia took advantage of the financial vulnerability of the victims and orchastrated the crime by trading their kidneys and livers. In this regard, a complaint was lodged with the Health Minister and the Chief Minister last September, Babu said. He added, however, no action was not taken in this regard.

According to him, out of the seven victims, five donated kidneys and two donated livers.The police had registered a case and investigated the case, he added.

He said his NGO contacted these women as soon as he got to know about it. Babu also stated that the women informed that the organs were donated through an agent. The agent contacted people who lived on the outskirts of the city. They also disclosed information regarding the money they received from the agent.  

Sabith Nasar, an agent involved in organ trading, was arrested during an investigation conducted in Kochi. The Angamaly Sessions Court had remanded the accused.
