'He killed him': Panic in Mumbai local train after rain-time door dispute ends in fatal stabbing

Mumbai: Panic gripped a packed Mumbai local train late Tuesday night after a young commuter was allegedly stabbed during an argument over whether a coach door should remain open amid heavy rain, with videos circulating on social media capturing frantic passengers shouting for help moments after the attack.

In the videos, distressed commuters can be heard yelling, "He is dead," "He killed him," and "Take him to the hospital fast," as fellow passengers gathered around the injured man inside the first-class compartment.

Police identified the victim as 22-year-old Mayank Lohar, who was allegedly attacked aboard a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train between Andheri and Borivali stations.

According to investigators, the confrontation began shortly after the train reached Andheri station around 10.42 pm. Officials said the two commuters argued over whether the coach door should be kept open despite heavy rainfall that accompanied Mumbai's monsoon onset on Tuesday.

What started as a verbal dispute quickly escalated when the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon and stabbed Lohar in the abdomen, police said.

As shocked passengers attempted to assist the victim, the train continued towards Borivali station. The accused allegedly fled after jumping from the train at Borivali before authorities could detain him.

Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel rushed to the coach after the train arrived at the station. Lohar was shifted for medical treatment but was later declared dead at a hospital.

The suspect remains absconding, and a manhunt has been launched.

Railway authorities said CCTV footage and other evidence have been handed over to investigators.
