Manipuri musician beaten to death after objecting to drinking outside Delhi home; 8 held

New Delhi: A 54-year-old Manipuri musician died following a brutal assault by a group of eatery and delivery workers in the early hours of Monday. The victim had allegedly asked the men to stop drinking alcohol and shouting outside his residence in South Delhi's Kilokari village, police said.

Authorities have arrested seven adult suspects and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the fatal attack.
 

The incident came to light after the Sunlight Colony police station received an emergency call regarding the assault on C Vikram Singh, a long-time resident of Kilokari village belonging to the Meitei community. According to a preliminary investigation, Singh went outside to object to the group causing a disturbance in front of his apartment. The men then attacked him, inflicting severe injuries with repeated punches and blows.

Singh's son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The North East Students Society, Delhi University (NESSDU) issued a statement expressing condolences and describing Singh as a “respected Manipuri musician”.

“According to reports, Singh went downstairs from his residence in Kilokri, New Delhi, after a group of six men were allegedly drinking and creating a disturbance outside his apartment. When he requested them to lower the noise, he was reportedly attacked by the group and sustained severe injuries, to which he later succumbed,” the student organisation noted, calling the attack a “senseless act of violence” and demanding a “swift, fair, and thorough investigation”.

Police identified the arrested adults as Bharat Kumar (19), Pramod (26), Ramzan Khan (22), Deepanshu (21), Mohan Vishwakarma (32), Vijay (36) and Mannu (26). Investigators confirmed that all the accused, along with the detained minor, work at local food stalls and dhabas in the area.

A comprehensive investigation into the crime remains ongoing.
