Kothamangalam: The death of a six-year-old girl in Kothamangalam, Ernakulam, has been confirmed as a case of murder. Police revealed that the girl was killed by her stepmother, who allegedly suffocated her while she was sleeping.

The incident took place this morning (Thursday, December 19), when the girl, who had gone to bed, was found dead inside the house. Authorities are also investigating whether the child’s father had any involvement in the crime.

The family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, has been living in Kothamangalam for the past 10 years. Neighbors, who grew suspicious upon hearing about the girl’s death, alerted a local panchayat member and the police. The Kothamangalam police arrived at the scene and sent the body for a postmortem examination.

According to the stepmother, the child was unresponsive when she woke up in the morning and was immediately taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. However, the postmortem report revealed that the child had died due to suffocation. This led the police to detain both the father and the stepmother, who were present in the house at the time, for detailed questioning. The interrogation uncovered evidence confirming the stepmother's involvement in the murder.

The police have so far disclosed only that the stepmother was responsible for the crime. Further details are expected to be shared by the Aluva Rural SP. The Aluva Rural SP, along with the Kothamangalam police, visited the station to gather additional information and continue the investigation.

Initial findings suggest that the father was not involved in the murder. During questioning, it was clarified that he was not at home when the incident occurred. Nevertheless, the police emphasized that they would conduct a comprehensive investigation, exploring all possible angles.
