Dramatic turn: Kerala BJP leader surrenders in ₹8 Cr heist at Muslim League-linked centre in Qatar

A major burglary case in Doha, Qatar, took a dramatic turn in Kerala after a local political leader surrendered to the police nearly a year after the crime. Parappil Balakrishnan, a resident of Koyilandy in Kozhikode district, walked into the Koyilandy police station on Wednesday to turn himself in. He is accused of participating in an ₹8 crore robbery at the Qatar Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) office in Al Thumama, Doha. The stolen money, amounting to 31 lakh Qatari Riyals, was part of a welfare fund meant for overseas Keralites. Though the heist took place on September 18, 2025, official legal action began only recently after a formal complaint was lodged in Kerala.
How the midnight Gulf heist unfolded
The target of the heist was the KMCC, a cultural and social welfare organisation associated with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which is a key partner in Kerala's Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) coalition. According to the police, the robbery was a planned operation involving gang members flown in from Kerala. Four individuals were brought to Qatar by air on work visas specifically to execute the burglary, while two accomplices already based in the country helped arrange their accommodation and local planning.
On the night of the crime, the gang broke into the KMCC office, tied up an office room boy, and targeted the facility's strongroom. Balakrishnan, who works as a welder in Kerala, was brought in specifically to cut open the strongroom and locker using a gas cutter. Once the locker was breached and the cash looted, Balakrishnan returned to Kerala.
Suspect claims deception in confession video
Following his surrender, a video surfaced showing Balakrishnan confessing before local KMCC and community leaders in Koyilandy. In the video, Balakrishnan claimed he was tricked into participating without understanding the true nature of the job.
"They took me saying an Arab's locker key was lost and needed to be opened," Balakrishnan claimed in his confession, adding, "I did not know it was the KMCC office".
Explaining how he was recruited, he said, "In my hometown, I do all kinds of welding work, including gas cutter jobs". He pointed to a man named Shaji as the recruiter: "Bombay Shaji said there was a job in the Gulf, so I agreed. I went out of a desire to see the Gulf, and they misled me".
He added regarding his travel arrangements, "They said they would take care of my ticket and visa, so I went".
Balakrishnan claimed he was promised a large sum but received very little: "They promised that if they got the money, they would give me more than ₹10 lakh". However, describing what he actually received, he said, "After the robbery, they gave me ₹50,000 there [in Qatar] and ₹1.50 lakh after reaching here [in Kerala]".
He identified the person who handed over the funds, saying, "Saibaba, alias Bava, gave me the money, and he works in fishing at Thikkodi beach".
Insisting he was kept in the dark, Balakrishnan maintained, "I did not know the purpose for which we were taken there". He noted that as soon as the job was done, "Once the locker was opened and the cash was taken, the others left with the money".
Why the police complaint took a year
Despite the massive sum stolen, no investigation took place immediately after the incident because no formal complaint was lodged with the authorities at the time. It was only on September 15, 2026, that Qatar KMCC Vice-President P.K. Abdul Rahim formally approached the Koyilandy police following intense political criticism against the organisation and the IUML.
Following the complaint, the police registered a case naming several individuals. The accused list includes 'Bombay' Shaji, Rashi (also known as Rashi Payyoli), Salih (alias Bava), Hassan (alias Mammali), Nisar, Asainar, Rottana Rasak, and Kakachi Kamaru. Police said that Bombay Shaji, Rashi, and Salih allegedly hatched the main conspiracy, while Balakrishnan, Hassan, and Nisar assisted in executing the robbery. Investigators are currently questioning Balakrishnan, searching for the remaining suspects—some of whom are abroad—and probing whether individuals connected with KMCC itself were involved.
Political fallout and BJP demand for central agency probe
The case has triggered political tension in Kerala due to Balakrishnan's party links. Balakrishnan had contested as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in Ward 3 of the Koyilandy Municipality in last year's local body elections and currently serves as the BJP Viyyoor booth president.
Responding to the development, the BJP Mandalam President acknowledged Balakrishnan's connection to the party. "The accused is indeed a party worker," the leader said. Clarifying the timeline, he added, "He was previously a BJP candidate. The robbery took place before he joined the party".
Addressing his current political status, the BJP leader announced, "He has been removed from party responsibilities until the investigation is complete".
The local BJP leadership has demanded a central agency inquiry into the entire episode. Demanding a wider probe, the BJP leader said, "A central agency must investigate to find out who brought Balakrishnan to Qatar and whether the money was smuggled into the country".
