Fingerprint tracking app: 'Abhigyan' to help police catch criminals instantly

Kozhikode: Police officers can now catch suspects by checking their fingerprints on the spot, without needing the help of the Fingerprint Bureau. The Central Government's 'Abhigyan' app is being prepared with the details of 1.25 crore people involved in various crimes across the country. With this, police officers will no longer have to depend on fingerprint experts to identify absconders in cases like drugs and human trafficking. It will also help identify the history of people found in suspicious circumstances.
How the project works
The Abhigyan app will be installed on the mobile phones of police officers.
The fingerprints of suspects will be scanned through the app. Through this, case details and other information can be obtained within 10 seconds.
Real-time identification without fingerprint experts
The app will contain all the details of the case. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has instructed the Fingerprint Bureau Directors of various states to make the app ready within six months.
The Kerala Police estimates that this can be fully implemented in the state by December.
This year, the names and details of around 2 lakh people involved in various crimes in the state have already been collected into the app. More than half of them are individuals arrested for theft.
Fast-tracking drug traffickers
Drug traffickers can be identified quickly during inspections using the app. The central database linked with the app contains details of approximately over 9.91 lakh people involved in drug cases and over 3.65 lakh accused in human trafficking cases.
