Fentanyl trail deepens mystery in Kolkata NRS nurse death, three vials found with her

The mysterious death of a young nurse at Kolkata's NRS Medical College and Hospital has taken a new turn, with investigators focusing on three vials of fentanyl that she reportedly took with her shortly before her death. ‘

The nurse had also got married very recently, adding another layer to the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Hospital sources said the nurse, who was on night duty at the HDU, had the three fentanyl vials with her when she went to the gynaecology department's washroom on Wednesday night.

The drug is commonly used for sedation and pain management in medical settings. Investigators are now trying to establish why the nurse had taken the vials with her and how the drug entered her body.

Sources said fentanyl had been injected into the area around her elbow joint. The circumstances surrounding the injection are yet to be established.

The nurse was found unconscious inside the washroom after her colleagues raised an alarm when she failed to return. She was subsequently taken to a hospital bed, where doctors declared her dead.

There were reportedly no visible injury marks on her body, and no suicide note was recovered. The absence of any apparent physical injuries, coupled with the fentanyl angle, has raised several questions about the case.

The nurse was a resident of Dum Dum, while her family is originally from East Midnapore. Her husband has reportedly opposed conducting her post-mortem at NRS, another aspect being examined amid the ongoing investigation.

Following the incident, a team of senior Kolkata Police officers reached NRS and questioned hospital staff and other nurses.

The homicide team, led by Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Aggarwal and DC (Eastern Suburban) Subimal Pal, is investigating the case.

Police are now attempting to piece together the nurse's movements before her death, trace the three fentanyl vials, and determine whether anyone else was involved in the administration of the drug.

The exact circumstances and cause of her death remain under investigation.
