Drama in Punjab: AAP MLA allegedly runs over cop, escapes custody after arrest

Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Harmeet Singh Dhillon Pathanmajra allegedly escaped from police custody while being transported to a local police station following his arrest, according to Punjab Police sources.
The incident reportedly took place during the MLA’s transit, when he and his associates allegedly opened fire on police personnel and ran over one officer while attempting to flee. At least one police official was injured in the confrontation. A manhunt is currently underway to locate the MLA and his accomplices.
Background on the arrest
Prior to the dramatic escape, Advocate Simranjeet Singh Saggu, representing Harmeet Singh, had confirmed the arrest, calling it politically motivated and legally questionable.
"An FIR has been registered against Harmeet Singh...A matter was pending before the High Court. The HC disposed it off and marked DIG Ropar Range for inquiry," said Advocate Saggu.
"This FIR is the outcome of the change in political scenario in past two days due to floods," he added, calling it “a tug of war between the political people and the bureaucracy.”
What are the allegations?
According to the defence, the FIR includes serious charges under Section 376 (rape) and Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. Advocate Saggu argued that the allegations had already been reviewed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and referenced a status report submitted by the SSP, Mohali, in which the complainant admitted to being in a live-in relationship with the MLA.
"She is ready to continue if the relations improve. Even if this is the situation, sections 376 and 420 are being invoked. This raises a big question on the system's working," Saggu noted.
The MLA was expected to be presented before the Patiala District Court, but the alleged escape has added a dramatic twist to the legal proceedings.
