‘Criminals feel protected’: BJP attacks Karnataka govt over law and order after Hampi rape case

Hubbali, Karnataka: The gruesome Hampi rape and murder case has escalated into a major political controversy, with the BJP launching a scathing attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government over its handling of law and order.
BJP MLA Mahesh Tenginkai condemned the incident, accusing the state government of negligence and emboldening anti-social elements. 'The state government has failed to provide security to foreign tourists. Law and order should be maintained, but criminals feel protected under this administration,' Tenginkai said.
His remarks reflect the BJP’s broader criticism of the Congress government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, alleging that lawlessness has increased under his leadership. The party has demanded stricter measures to prevent such crimes in Karnataka, especially in tourist hotspots like Hampi.
Congress defends actions, vows strict measures
Responding to the criticism, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara asserted that the government has taken the case “very seriously” and acted swiftly. “We have sent senior police officers to the scene, multiple arrests have been made, and investigations are progressing,” he said.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called the attack a “heinous crime” and pledged strong action against the accused. “We will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. The police have been directed to ensure the safety of all, including tourists visiting our state,” he stated.
Political blame game intensifies
With Karnataka set to play a crucial role in upcoming elections, the BJP has seized on the Hampi incident to target the Congress government over rising crime. The Congress, in turn, has accused the opposition of politicising the tragedy instead of supporting efforts to strengthen law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, the case has not only raised alarm over tourist safety but also turned into a political flashpoint, with both parties seeking to leverage the issue in the state’s high-stakes political battle.
