10-year-old dies after being made to stand in sun for not bringing book to school

New Delhi: A 10-year-old girl studying at a government school in east Delhi's Vinod Nagar died while undergoing treatment last week after her family alleged that she was made to stand in the sun as punishment for not bringing a book to school, police sources said on Monday.

The incident reportedly took place on August 27 at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, where the girl was a student.

According to the family, the school contacted the girl's mother, Anjali, after her condition deteriorated. Anjali alleged that when she reached the school, she found her daughter standing outside in the sun and in a serious condition.

The family further alleged that a teacher had punished the girl for failing to bring a book to school. She was later taken to a hospital for treatment, where she died on August 27, according to police sources.

Following her death, family members and local residents staged a protest outside the school, seeking strict action against those responsible.

BJP MLA Ravinder Singh Negi also visited the site and said an inquiry would be conducted and strict action would be taken against any school staff member found guilty.

Police said the allegations are currently being investigated.
