Can TVK really break the DMK-AIADMK stronghold?
Chennai: Vijay’s entry into Tamil Nadu politics has marked a shift in a landscape long dominated by the DMK and the AIADMK. With his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, a third major force has now entered the contest, changing the traditional two-way political battle into a multi-cornered race.
In his campaign speeches, Vijay positioned himself as a strong alternative to existing political forces. He said, “a lion is always a lion,” and claimed his confidence comes from public support across the world.
He also accused rival parties of political alliances and backroom understandings, stating, “there is an underground dealing between DMK and BJP.”
Exit polls suggest TVK could cross the 120-seat mark, while some party leaders are even more optimistic. A senior leader said, “‘Whistle’ revolution will ensure 200 seats for TVK.”
Launched in 2024, TVK was built on promises of clean governance, youth empowerment and a break from traditional political culture. By 2026, it has grown into a full electoral challenge, contesting independently without alliances and relying heavily on youth support and grassroots outreach.
Vijay has emphasised his personal bond with voters, saying, “Tamil Nadu is TVK, and TVK is Tamil Nadu.” He described his connection with people as deeply emotional and long-term, not just political.
With results due on May 4, TVK’s performance is expected to play a key role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s political future. Analysts say even a strong vote share could significantly alter the state’s political balance.
TVK’s rise has turned the election into a three-cornered contest, breaking the long-standing DMK-AIADMK dominance. Vijay has also made it clear that this election is only the beginning of his political journey, not the end.
