Kannur: Violence broke out in multiple locations across Taliparamba constituency in Kerala’s Kannur district after the conclusion of Kerala Assembly election polling, with incidents of stabbing, assaults and property damage reported, police said.

The constituency witnessed heightened tension as counting preparations began following a closely contested election battle involving the CPM and Congress-led UDF, with an Independent candidate also in the fray.

CPM worker stabbed near polling station

According to police at Mayyil station, a CPM worker identified as Prakashan P (50) was allegedly stabbed near Mulakkody UP School polling station around 7 pm on Thursday.

A case of attempted murder has been registered against a UDF activist identified as Krishnan. The injured worker was admitted to the hospital and is stated to be in a stable condition.

Counter cases filed amid political clashes

Police have also registered a counter case against six CPM workers, including Prakashan, for allegedly attacking two UDF activists, Bhaskaran P (56) and Shyju K V (46), within the same school premises.

The UDF workers reportedly sustained injuries after being attacked with stones, further escalating post-election violence in Kannur district.

House attack, vandalism reported

In a separate incident, police registered a case against 15 alleged CPM workers for trespassing into a woman’s house in Mullakodi around 9.30 pm.

The group is accused of issuing threats, damaging household property, breaking furniture, and vandalising a scooter parked outside the residence.

Additional clash near Malappattam

Another case was filed after alleged clashes between party workers near Malappattam, where a CPM worker, Venugopalan K of Mepparamba, was reportedly attacked by UDF activists. Police said investigations are underway.

Police probe post-poll clashes

Authorities confirmed that multiple FIRs have been registered in connection with post-poll political violence in Taliparamba, and a detailed investigation is in progress. Arrests are expected as part of the ongoing probe.

High-stakes political backdrop

The Taliparamba constituency, a traditional Left Democratic Front (LDF) stronghold, saw a high-profile contest this election cycle. CPM leader T K Govindan is contesting as an Independent with UDF support, while he faces CPM’s official candidate P K Shyamala, wife of state secretary M V Govindan, adding to the political intensity in the region.
