Onam hopes dim for Kerala cardamom farmers as climate change hits harvest
Despite cardamom prices reaching record levels, the Onam season has brought little relief to small-scale farmers and traders in Kerala’s high-range region. A sharp drop in production, linked to erratic weather, has prevented many growers from benefiting from the favourable market prices.
Farmers had expected the festive season to bring better returns. However, inadequate monsoon rainfall during June and July has severely affected the growth and yield of cardamom plants. The period is particularly important for plant growth and flowering.
