Kashmir garlic industry thrives as demand surges across India
Kashmir’s garlic industry is witnessing significant growth, emerging as a success story for the region’s agricultural sector. Farmers across the Valley have reported a strong harvest this season, with production estimated at nearly 25,000 tonnes. The thriving crop is providing livelihoods to thousands of farmers, laborers, traders, and transport workers involved in the garlic supply chain.
According to growers, large consignments of Kashmir-grown garlic are now being shipped to markets across India, reflecting increasing demand for the region’s produce. The expansion of market reach has boosted farmer confidence and created new economic opportunities in rural areas.
Despite the positive trend, farmers have expressed concerns over competition from imported Chinese garlic, which they say affects local prices and profitability. They are calling on the government to introduce measures that protect domestic producers and strengthen market support.
