Desperate search: Nepal flood-hit families scan hospital photos for missing loved ones

Families in Nepal faced another agonising day on Monday as they searched for loved ones still missing after last week’s devastating flash floods.

At hospitals in Kathmandu, relatives went through photographs of missing people displayed on walls, hoping to recognise someone they knew. Some had been searching for days, with no information about whether their loved ones were safe. 

Teams recording details of missing people said relatives continued to arrive each day, though their numbers varied. They were being asked when and where their family members went missing and how many people remained unaccounted for.

The desperate searches follow the flash floods of August 26, triggered by an ice-and-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border. Torrents of water, mud and debris swept through parts of northern and central Nepal.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, families remain caught in painful uncertainty, waiting for any information that could help them find those still missing.
