Kerala Election 2026: Voter sentiment split in Aroor amid development and governance debate

Aroor, Alappuzha: Nestled along Kerala’s iconic backwaters, the Aroor Assembly constituency is defined by its islands, coastal communities, and unique way of life. Here, issues of livelihood, development, and governance are deeply intertwined, shaping voter sentiment ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Traditionally a Left stronghold, Aroor sees sitting MLA Daleema Jojo of the LDF seeking re-election, while Shanimol Usman, former MLA from 2019 to 2021, is contesting on behalf of the UDF.

LDF focuses on infrastructure development

Daleema Jojo is campaigning on the LDF government’s development record, highlighting key infrastructure projects that have improved connectivity and accessibility across the constituency.

Central to her campaign is the ₹100-crore Perumbalam Bridge, which links Perumbalam Island to the mainland across the Vembanad Lake, along with the Kudappuram–Eramalloor bridge.

Daleema Jojo (LDF candidate) says, "This is not a government that deceives people. Even during challenges like COVID, Nipah, cyclones, and floods, no government has carried out development works on such a scale. The Perumbalam bridge, completed at around ₹100 crore, is one of the longest bridges in Kerala. One must see it to believe it."

UDF highlights governance gaps

The UDF, however, argues that infrastructure alone cannot address wider concerns. Shanimol Usman is campaigning on issues such as road safety, challenges in the marine sector, and gaps in basic amenities, including drinking water.

Shanimol Usman (UDF candidate) says, "On the highway from Thuravoor to the National Highway, 58 people lost their lives because the DPR was flawed. Both state and central governments are responsible. The marine industry here has collapsed, and drinking water facilities are inadequate. People are upset with the LDF government."

Voter sentiment split

Ground reports suggest a constituency divided. Some voters credit the LDF for recent development efforts and are backing continuity.

Khadeeja, LDF supporter, "Last time, she performed very well. We are confident she will deliver again."

Leela, LDF supporter, "We have always voted for this party and will continue to do so. Our trust lies with the LDF."

Salim, LDF supporter, "Compared to previous governments, this one is far ahead in development. I believe the Pinarayi government will return, allowing these initiatives to be completed."

Conversely, a section of voters is seeking change, influenced by past performance and candidate accessibility.

Molly Rajendran, UDF supporter, "People hope for change. Shanimol Usman served well in her earlier term, and voters are optimistic about her return."

Fazarudin, UDF supporter, "The trend indicates a UDF win. Misgovernance and lack of vision have turned people against the Pinarayi government. I expect a margin of around 10,000 votes."

Key contest ahead

With both parties presenting contrasting narratives on development and governance, Aroor is set for a tightly contested race. Polling will be held in a single phase on April 9, with votes to be counted on May 4.
