Did Suriya and Jyotika live the love ‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’ once described?

What if a love story written for the screen had already captured the very relationship its lead pair would go on to build in real life? Twenty years after Suriya and Jyotika got married, Jyotika’s words about their relationship sound remarkably close to a scene from their own film ‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’.

The couple recently renewed their wedding vows, marking 20 years of marriage with an intimate Christian wedding ceremony surrounded by their children, Diya, Dev and loved ones. Sharing pictures and a video from the celebration, Jyotika called it “THE SEQUEL” but was quick to clarify that it was not about a perfect marriage.

“And no, this is not a celebration of a perfect marriage. This is a celebration of imperfections, of adjustments, of understanding, sacrifices, of loving each other selflessly. This is a celebration of “us”. The people we have become for each other,” she wrote.

Her vows were not about romance in its idealised form but the life they had actually made together. “I vow to be a happy person — because I choose to see only life's positive side,” she wrote, before adding, “I vow never to complain- Why should I ? when even something as vast as the sky doesn’t have the privilege of touching the ground! Look around , everything in existence is incomplete. It’s how we choose to fill the gaps.”

She spoke about motherhood, health, gratitude and most importantly, the friendship at the centre of their marriage.

“I vow, my Suriya, to always remain that imperfect wife, who fights, and then makes up, only to grow a little more closer to you each time.”

And then comes the line that perhaps explains their relationship best, “I vow to cherish our friendship most of all because it’s rare to find your equal, your confidant, your gossip partner and your best friend, all living inside this one special man who also happens to be your husband and the father of your children.”

Interestingly, ‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’ had its own way of describing the depth of Suriya and Jyotika’s on-screen bond. In the film, Aishu, played by Bhoomika Chawla, speaks to Kundhavi, Jyotika’s character, after spending time with Gautham, Suriya’s character.

(My dear Kundhavi, I can never forget you for giving me an unforgettable moment in my life. Thank you. When you left Gautham with me, I could understand the worry and anxiety in your eyes as a woman.)

(You left Gautham with me for a day, but we needed only one hour. Forty minutes of silence, ten minutes of hospitality and ten minutes of conversation. And even during those ten minutes of talking, every word that came from him was ‘Kundhavi, Kundhavi, Kundhavi.’)

(I understood how deeply you are a part of his life.)

Aishu then uses the metaphor of something precious being protected because of how much it means to us,

(When something is very precious to us, we protect it carefully because we fear someone might take it away or misuse it. But when we realise that it is in a place even safer than being with us, we feel at peace.)

(I am leaving with that peace of mind. I want to love Gautham in my next life too. But not as Aishu — I want to be born as Kundhavi and love him. Thank you, Kundhavi. Thank you.)

The scene was fiction. But watching it today, after two decades of Suriya and Jyotika’s marriage, its idea feels unexpectedly familiar.

Because Jyotika’s latest vow is not about a love without conflict. It is of two people who fight, adjust, understand, grow and remain friends through it all.

“So here’s to our next twenty years. The imperfect us, with the perfect understanding.”
